Something Old, Something New

Broken China Jewelry by Laura Beth Love

It's been a while since I've used an oxidized, blackened patina on my silver soldered metalwork broken china jewelry, but I think these two new pieces turned out great! Poppies are one of my most favorite flowers and when I found this antique English chintz china, I knew it would be perfect transformed into a few unique pieces of jewelry. I love the bright pops of color that contrast with the blackened silver. Find them here before they disappear!

Unique necklace completely handcrafted from vintage china. This artisan metalwork pendant is expertly hand-soldered and one of a kind. This unique pendant features silver wire with genuine Garnet, Pearl, Green Aventurine, and Swarovski crystal beads throughout. I carefully soldered the wire to the pendant with silver solder and then oxidized the metalwork with a black patina, then hand buffed it to a beautiful antique silver finish. I make each one by hand from start to finish and no two are exactly alike.

New Vintage China Bracelets! (& More)

Hi friends! This week I have four new broken china bracelets in my shop - they are so much fun to wear; stylish, and just plain cool! These bracelets are made from antique china shards that I hand-select for the best combination of patterns for each bracelet. Once I choose the patterns I then hand-smooth all of the edges of each shard until they are perfectly smooth.

To keep these bracelets lightweight and comfortable to wear, I do not do any soldered metalwork on them, but instead I adhere each shard to silverplated bracelet blank using a strong jewelry adhesive. Once completed, each finished bracelet measures about 7" in length - a small to medium size - but I will gladly add additional chain links at the end of the bracelet to extend the size if needed (at no additional cost!) so be sure to let me know if you would like yours custom-sized. :)

As always, here's what's new in my Etsy shop so far this week. More on the way!

All items shown are available in my Etsy shop.

I hope you like them! Let me know what you'd like to see next!

If you've purchased from me and want to show off your jewelry please send me a photo of you wearing it and I would LOVE to feature it on my blog and/or my Dishfunctional Designs Facebook page!

Feel free to send me photos through Facebook or email them to me at sales@dishfunctionaldesigns.com or even through an Etsy message. I LOVE seeing folks enjoying what I make so send me those photos!

New Broken China Jewelry In My Etsy Shop & Happy Spring!

Ah, it's finally springtime. I love it. I truly hibernated this winter! I'm glad for the warmer weather and to be able to spend lots more time outside, even if I'm spending that time working outdoors.

My Etsy shop was very busy in March this year. Hmmm. That's kind of unusual, but with the ongoing changes within Etsy's search algorithms you kind of never know what you're going to get these days in terms of exposure and where you land up in the search results. In any case, I've been busy creating lots of new broken china jewelry and am revisiting some china patterns (especially some of the vintage chintz patterns) that I haven't used in jewelry for a while, so be sure to keep an eye on my new listings!

Here are the nine pieces I made yesterday. I have tons more on the way, it just takes me time to get them listed in my shop because I'm a stickler for having perfect shapes, perfect soldering, and great photos - and all of that takes time. You can't rush a good thing!

I hope you like them :)

New Broken China Jewelry In My Etsy Shop & Goals For 2017

Hello friends! I hope 2017 has been off to a great start for each of you! I started my year off with a dose of creative inspiration with a visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and if you missed my blog post about it, be sure to check it out here!

I am so grateful for the opportunities and challenges I've had in 2016, and it really has been a year of creative transformation! I am once again deciding what I am going to do for 2017. As I did last year, I am still considering the possibility of a third book, putting some ideas together for a few more jewelry or craft DVDs, and once again jumping head first into creating new designs for 2017!

I love exploring different areas of design, and in 2016 became absolutely engrossed with illustrating for fun. I was thrilled to find that my original designs that I created from pen and ink illustrations have been selling well as a variety of home decor products on Society6, so I will certainly be doing more drawing and painting in 2017!

On the flipside, I am making a few small personal goals for 2017 that are things like trying to eat more vegetables, make sure I get more sleep (I absolutely love working late into the night but unfortunately it just doesn't mesh well with having to get up at 6:30 in the morning!), and of course, staying more organized in my workshop.

Here are the latest pieces of jewelry that I have listed in my Etsy shop. I know some of you like to see these enlarged photos, so I try to get them up here on the blog every now and again.

A word about the piece above - I am in LOVE with this necklace - it is a larger sized statement necklace that I made from an antique Art Nouveau Flow Blue plate that was broken to pieces. (2 & 2/3" by 2 & 3/8", sterling silver chain.)

Oh, wait! I thought of another goal for 2017. I am determined to get my sewing machine out and sew lots of stuff. :) Not sure exactly what yet, but I really could use new kitchen curtains so I think I am going to start there. Maybe after that I will think of something fantastical and creative to create!
