Dorm rooms don't have to be dingy. As a matter of fact, it can be really uninspiring to live in a space that does not energize and motivate you, bring you joy and make you feel good. Did you know that your surroundings can directly influence your mood? I don't think it's any surprise that things such as colors and scents can make you feel great...or not so great.
So what do you do when you are not allowed to personalize your space by doing things like painting the walls or burning candles? Fear not, you can still have amazing style while still adhering to campus dorm rules. Obviously, common dorm rules are usually against doing things that would permanently alter the room (such as painting) or that go against safety (such as candles) but there are still lots of ways that you can make your space cozy, stylish, and all your own while still adhering to the rules.
1. Don't be afraid of COLOR!
First and foremost, don't be afraid to use color! Choose colors that make you feel good and help you relax. Add them to your room by way of your bedding, pillows, wall art, and carpets.
2. Plants = Energy
Plants add instant energy to a room. No matter whether you prefer cactus, succulents, or trailing vines, plants are also a great way to incorporate color into your living space. Plants are living things - take care of them, talk to them, give them names. :)
3. Make it cozy and comfy
A pretty floor pillow makes a great place to relax and meditate, and adds extra seating when friends come over to hang out. Adding a couple extra pillow shams to your bed can also up your comfort level and create extra seating space.
4. Add a wall tapestry or curtain and use it creatively
Tapestries have many uses - they're not just for hanging on walls, but are great for creating a bit more privacy in your room when used as a visual divider. Choose one in a size that fits your space!
5. Use lighting to set the mood
It's amazing what a string of Christmas lights can do. Draped string lights can add a great twinkle and relaxing mood to your room.
