Thanksgiving Place Setting Ideas & Inspiration

No matter your Thanksgiving style, I have inspiration for that! In this blog post I'll share a few Bohemian, Eclectic, Country Farmhouse, as well as Traditional place setting styles, but to start, let's go over some place setting rules.

First off, I'm all about tradition and adore the sentimentality of family traditions, but as for "you can only do this" or "you can only do that" types of rules - those I love to break! So yeah, forks on the left, and you work your way in from the outside towards your plate so the salad fork should be to the left of the dinner fork - but really, do you really need two forks? Really? In my opinion, that's completely up to you. Does your flatware all have to match? Heck no! See:

My mix & match china and silver from Thanksgiving 2021

It's helpful to have a water glass along side of your wine glass, that's pretty much essential, as long as you're using them. If not, that table space is prime real estate, especially when we may be hosting more folks at the table than usual.

All I'm saying is, go easy on yourself. Make it easy for yourself. If great-Aunt Ethyl gets upset and has to point out that her silverware doesn't match, just remember that the way someone treats you is a reflection of how they feel about themselves. No worries, friends. Remember, it's your day to enjoy as well, not just serve! :)

A Boho to Eclectic style is perfect for showing off your mix & match prowess! Bring out those bold colors and if you're lucky enough to still have them, those chunky jewel-tone glassware pieces from the 70's. They're all the rage again, right now.

You don't have to use charger plates, especially if you don't have the space (I think most people do without them).

Wait. What is a charger plate anyway?
A charger plate is a ginormous plate that sits below your dinner plate for the whole purpose of being fancy. Oo. We like fancy. But we also like elbow room. Well, not on the table at least.

Charger plates are purely for decoration only. You never eat off of them. As a matter of fact, most are probably not even safe to eat off of as they are usually coated with odd glazes or paints that are not food-safe.

Brighter, fresher colors are great for more of a country or farmhouse look, with flowers being less formal and including things like dried hydrangeas, grasses, and wildflowers. Light green goes great with this style, as well as a pale, muted butter yellow. Mini pumpkins and other decorative gourds finish off the table - as long as they're not too large.

Check, please! Don't be afraid to use patterns. And colors.

And that wraps up my ideas and inspiration for place settings. I'll be back soon with some tablescapes to really get you in the holiday mood. If you're bored in the meantime, find out what happened when I accidentally roasted my turkey upside down last year. Lol. And here's how to make the best sweet potatoes EVER.
