Hanging Basket Herb Garden DIY

If you're short on space but still want to grow your own fresh herbs for cooking, why not create a hanging basket herb garden?

Use a three-tiered metal mesh hanging kitchen basket, line it with a coco moss outdoor planting basket liner (available at garden supply centers), and trim with scissors to fit the mesh hanging baskets. Fill the lined baskets with soil and herbs, water, and that's it!

What's neat about this project is that it's mobile.
Hang outdoors for growth, and then bring inside and hang in a sunny kitchen window during the cooler months.

What do you think?

My broken china jewelry is always available for purchase at

  1. I love this idea! But how do you get it to not leak indoors through the moss?

    1. If you are making this for indoor use then you would need to add an impermeable lining to the basket either between the soil and the moss liner or between the basket and the moss liner.

    2. You could put part of a plastic garbage bag in first, and then water carefully. For outdoors put the plastic first, poke some holes in it,and then the coco loner. This will keep moisture in it longer. I do that with my wire baskets for my flowers. Works well.

  2. very very good idea. I have a mesh wire basket and it's going slightly rusty so this idea will be used for it. Thanks
