How To Make A Pair Of Ear Wires For Earrings

How to make earwires for earrings

If  you are not already making your own ear wires for earrings then you need to watch this ear wire tutorial now! Making your own earwires is easier than you might think, and with a little bit of instruction and practice, you will be turning out your own handcrafted earrings in no time at all.

This beginner technique is essential to jewelry making. If you're a complete beginner it may seem a bit daunting at first, but I promise, it's not at all as hard as it might seem. The tools and materials you need are minimal and are basic jewelry making tools that are essential to jewelry making, so once you invest in them you will use them for all sorts of jewelry making techniques and projects.

For this tutorial you will need:

Round nose pliers (sometimes called rosary pliers)

Chain nose pliers

Wire cutters (aka wire cutting pliers)

*Wire straightening pliers

*A ball peen hammer (you can improvise with a different hammer you have at home if you do not yet own a ball peen hammer)

*A steel bench block (another thing you can improvise on if you do not yet own one)

A ruler

24 gauge wire

*A note on the tools:

The round nose pliers and wire cutters are essential tools but you can easily improvise with a different hammer if you do not yet own a ball peen hammer.

Same goes for the steel bench block; you can hammer on another hard surface until you acquire a bench block.

The wire straightening pliers are a great tool to have and really are useful, so if you do not have a pair, put them on your list to get in the future, as they will make working with wire SO much easier and will make your work look much more professional, but you do not need them to learn how to make earwires.

For this video tutorial, I used 24 gauge sterling silver wire but when you are just starting out and learning you should use inexpensive craft wire or copper wire (you can buy both at most craft stores and watch for those coupons!) Save the expensive precious metal wire for when you perfect your techniques and practice on the inexpensive stuff!

Did you know that you can also buy copper wire in many different gauges at your local hardware store? Check it out the next time you visit, and take note of the prices. When I first started out with jewelry making and wire work, I bought myself a wire stripper and a few spools of different gauge wire at my local Home Depot and paid only a fraction of the cost that jewelry catalogs charged for wire.

The wire that I bought was plastic coated, so the wire strippers were essential to easily removing the plastic coating from the wire. Be careful though, those buggers are sharp!

Check out the tutorial video below, or watch it directly from my YouTube channel.

Enjoy the tutorial and I'd love to know how your ear wires turn out, so be sure to leave me a comment below and on the video on YouTube and don't forget to subscribe!

How To Hang A China Plate With A Paper Clip (Video)

We crafty folks know that the most fun type of  home decorating is the decorating that we do ourselves. And even better is when that decorating is thrifted, clever, and costs next to nothing.

Behold the humble paper clip.

Ok actually the bigger sized paper clip. But this handy little invention isn't just for keeping papers neatly organized. Did you know that you can use one to hang a plate on your wall?

Yes, gone are the days of those awkward plate-hanging contraptions that grandma used. They were difficult to manipulate and once you finally got one attached to your plate, you could see it clipped to the edge of a plate. Hanging plate displays look so much better when the plates are given the illusion of floating on the wall without any visible hanging hardware.

Now, if you are going to hang a precious heirloom or valuable plate, then I suggest going the old route with the old style plate hanger, since those do not attach permanently to the plate. But what if you want to create a fun plate wall with inexpensive plates that you might collect from a thrift store or flea market? Then paper clips are definitely the way to go.

Check out my latest video on my YouTube channel where I show you step by step how you can use a paper clip to hang a china plate.

My Amazing Thrift Shop Haul Video & Secret I Learned From The Cashier

Most people know that thrift shopping can be hit or miss. There have been many times I've left my favorite thrift shop empty handed. But there are other days when I've found such an amazing bargain that it makes up for all those empty-handed days!

I guess that's one of the things that makes thrift shop shopping so attractive and fun - it can be kind of a low budget treasure hunt where you never know what you might find.

We all have our mental lists of things that we look for when thrift shopping, whether it be something in particular such as materials for a project we want to make, or clothing, or vintage and antique items to resell.

I always look at the china and dinnerware, glance at the glassware, figurines and tchotchkes, and check and see if there are any craft supplies such as knitting needles, fat quarters or fabric remnants and lace and things like that that I can use for creating things. I will also take a look at the skirts or whatever else I customarily glance at just to see what they have.

As I wrote in past blog posts about thrift shop shopping, there are good shops and not so good shops, shops that are mostly clothes, shops that are mostly nick-knacks, overpriced shops, smartly-prices shops, shops that run sale days, and overpopulated shops that just have too many shoppers.  The key is to find balance and to know what the general feel is for that particular shop. For me, each shop that I visit kind of has it's own pros and cons. Some days aren't great shopping days, while others are.

This was one of the good days! Watch the video below where I share my treasures, as well as a cool tip I learned from the thrift shop cashier!

Here are a few more looks at my haul.
Guess how much everything cost?

I came home with an armload!
