Look! Mom's Dishes! ...Connections To Our Past

I've shared this blog post before because it's one of my favorites, and I thought today would be the perfect day to share it again, this time a little bit revised.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!

Sometimes I think I have the best job in the world, getting to work with beautiful china pieces day in and day out...sometimes it actually feels more like a privilege than an actual profession.

There are sometimes moments when I stop and think, wow, this is what I do for a living, this is what I've been doing for so many years - and for that I am so fortunate.

After all, each of these plates and cups and saucers and other dinnerware pieces all have history behind them. They come from many different countries, from all around the world, and their beautiful patterns and colors give them a unique appeal that brings them to life unlike other ordinary household objects.

They're used in the kitchen, which I've always felt was the heart of the home. They're filled with cooking - which is in itself an effort of love. Once filled, they are handed to you, passed along, as we sit around a family table and pass the dishes from hand to hand, sharing what they hold.

We see them and touch them multiple times a day, every day. We use them and we take care of them, washing them carefully so that they don't break, and then putting them away in a safe place. We sometimes even have special ones that we bring out only for special occasions.

But often we treasure the most humble ones.

Who doesn't have a favorite coffee mug? Or one plate or bowl or other piece of dinnerwear that once belonged to someone else in their family?

We remember dishes.

They're a part of our family in some ways, a part of each of our own personal histories. Have you not once in your life been somewhere, maybe an antique market or thrift shop, and come across an orphaned plate or cup that you instantly recognized from somewhere in your own past?

At that moment of recognition, it isn't just "a plate" or "a cup," but "mom's plate," or "grandmother's cup." There is a connection. Often when that connection is made we find ourselves flooded with memories of family from long ago, or of our childhood, or of holidays and times past. If you're the sentimental type like I amit can be a comforting experience.

I've been working with dishes for so long now that I know all the patterns by name. No, I don't talk to them, but in a way, they speak to me. I see them as valuable, not monetarily valuable, but valuable in a way that fills your soul with warmth and peace just as memories of loved ones do.

This was, after all, someone's grandmother's plate.
Someone just like you.

I hope you have a great week!
Love, Laura

Exciting Announcement: I Just Filmed Two New Jewelry Instruction Videos!

I love spreading good news. And boy, do I have some good news!

Late last evening I returned home to Pennsylvania after flying out to Colorado to film
two brand new jewelry instruction videos at the film studios at F+W Media, Inc., my
fabulous publisher! It was a whirlwind three days! Yup, I flew about 3,166.4 miles to
film two videos, just for you!  I traveled on a Monday, filmed two videos on Tuesday, and
traveled home Wednesday. Four flights across the United States, four different airports,
three days later, and it's all done!

Colorado is a beautiful place, and the landscape is quite different from what I am used
to in Pennsylvania, so it was a new experience for me in many different ways. This was
also my first time on camera...I wasn't very nervous, it was more like I didn't know exactly what to expect, exactly what it would be like. Kind of like when you're going to have a baby.
You can read and prepare all you want, but until it actually happens, you don't know exactly
how it's going to be until you experience it for real, right as it's happening!

Live on the set!

I will write more about the videos in a future blog post, but I will tell you now that the first
video teaches you how to make an awesome broken china jewelry necklace, and the second
video teaches you my new technique for combining wire with soft solder to create a beautiful
and amazing jewelry effect! If you love to make jewelry, or always wanted to learn how to
make soldered jewelry using a soldering iron, you will love these videos! (the video release
date is early December, by the way!)

Lights, cameras, jewelry making!

Well it's past my bedtime and I need to get some much needed sleep so that I can get my two
girls up for school tomorrow, but I just had to share the good news with you.

Enjoy your day! ~ Laura

I hope you have a great week

Inside Of My Studio: Soldering Jewelry Outside (...and my hydrangeas)

Okay so the the title might be a little misleading...I suppose it should instead read,
Outside Of My Studio...

I love summer and I've got to say I'm kind of sad to see it come to a close, so I am sucking up
any tiny last opportunity to do things outside in the sunshine before the cooler months roll
around. With my garden's last bouquet of hydrangeas on my backyard table (and check
these out, I'm so proud of my three hydrangea bushes - one pink, one blue, and one
purple!) I set up shop in the beautiful outdoors to solder up some pretty new pieces of
broken china jewelry. Soon I'll be flying out to Colorado to shoot two brand new jewelry
instruction videos, and I can already feel a few work deadlines fast approaching, so I'm
trying to stay mindful and move from task to task to get finished with what work needs
to get finished, while still finding time to do what I enjoy most, to just sit and create.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer too. :)  -laura

Working on a china heart pendant outside.

The last of my summer hydrangeas...so sad to see them go.

The wooden rim of my workboard keeps my projects from landing up in my lap. Hey,
that's one of my favorite skirts!

The colors are so pretty that they almost seem unreal!

I planted these three bushes one, two, and three years ago.

Early morning.

Beautiful pink hydrangeas

I Have An Exciting Announcement To Make...

I haven't had time to blog lately because I have a lot going on over here...
...so much in fact, that it is almost dizzying!

Since the release of my jewelry book, BoHo Chic Jewelry,  I have been very busy
trying to carve out time to create new jewelry for my Etsy shop, basically trying to
play catch-up, but I don't feel like I am making much progress because it always seems
that by the time I finish up a new piece of jewelry or two (and it is time consuming!),
photograph it, and list it in my shop, it is sold! Of course that's a good thing though,
and I am so grateful to all of my wonderful customers who enjoy my work, those of you
who want it for yourselves to wear, or as gifts for friends or family. I thank you :)
Know that I make every piece just for you.

That's where I have been, and I promise, very soon, that I will be back to creating
lots of new pretty pieces of china jewelry as well as stirring up some fun new blog
posts in the near future. But!!! I have an exciting announcement to share! :)

The reason I've been so busy is that I recently received my second book deal to write
another jewelry instruction book - Yay! So I have been very hard at work writing and
creating new projects to share for the new book! I can't give away too much top
secret information about it just yet, but I will tell you that the projects are so
unique and beautiful, and I am so excited to share these new ideas and techniques!

Title to be announced soon! Stay tuned!
...and as always, thank you.

I hope you have a great week
Love, Laura
